Earned Wage Access
Earned Wage Access (or EWA) is a service for Duke employees that provides early access to a portion of their earned wages, if needed, outside of their traditional pay cycle. It is sometimes referred to as pay flexibility, early, instant, or on-demand pay.
Duke has partnered with industry leaders to offer this service through the DailyPay or Wisely apps.
The available balance at any given time is calculated as a percentage of the individual’s regular compensation and hours, accounting for withholdings, worked to date during the pay period less any advances previously taken during the pay period.
Accessing Pay Advance – DailyPay and Wisely
Duke employees enrolling in this voluntary program can access their pay in advance through the DailyPay or myWisely app, both available for download on iOS and Andriod mobile devices from the Apple Store or Google Play Store. Each app offers distinct features to employees. Two options provide employees with the benefit of choice based on how often they want to access their pay.
DailyPay
- DailyPay offers two transfer options: you can select next business day transfer of funds (between 1-3 calendar/business days) for no charge, or you can select same-day transfers (almost instant) up to 5x transfers/day, for a flat fee of $3.49 per transfer (similar to using an ATM)
- Transfers employees’ earned wages to any existing bank account, debit card, or prepaid card
- In addition to the app, access DailyPay by visiting dailypay.com or texting START to 66867
- Use your Duke email address to get started and match to your Duke employment record (you may also use the home/cell phone listed with Duke and your Duke Unique ID)
- Employees must have a bank account to use this app.
- More information is available here
myWisely (Wisely Earned Wage Access)
- Instant transfers up to one time per calendar week at no charge
- Transfers employees’ earned wages to Wisely paycard and/or Wisely account
- Employees do not need a bank account to use this app.
- Wisely account balances are protected from fraud and FDIC-insured
- More information is available here
Determining the Advance Amount
An employee's available balance is the amount of money available for the employee to transfer before payday. It is calculated based on hours worked during the current pay period minus any withholdings. The advance rate is calculated using based wages and does not include shift differential, overtime, or PTO/vacation. DailyPay systematically determines the advance rate available for each employee. The actual advance amount is capped at 75% of the system-calculated advance rate and then further refined based on additional data for each employee.
Employee Eligibility
Earned Wage Access is available to all non-exempt (bi-weekly) employees and exempt (monthly) employees who earn less than $200,000 annually. Graduate and undergraduate student employees are not eligible to participate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Earned Wage Access (EWA) is an optional program being offered to Duke employees to provide early access to a portion of their earned wages outside of their traditional biweekly or monthly pay cycle, if desired. Duke has partnered with industry leaders to offer this service through either the DailyPay or Wisely apps.
Duke understands that access to earned income is important to our employees, and may be particularly beneficial when employees encounter emergencies or incur unexpected expenses. EWA provided Duke employees access to their pay before their regularly scheduled payday when needed.
EWA is available to all non-exempt (bi-weekly) employees and exempt(monthly) employees who earn less than $200,000 annually.
Once an employee is enrolled in either DailyPay or Wisely, the employee can take advances on earned wages that will be sent to the account designated during the enrollment process (such as a bank account or debit card). The payroll advance through EWA for the pay period will be deducted from net pay on the regularly scheduled payday. The remaining balance of net pay is deposited into the employee's designated account.
Listed below are three ways to get started, all of which begin with DailyPay:
- Download the DailyPay App on iOS and Android mobile devices from the Apple® App Store or Google Play™ Store.
- Visit DailyPay.com
- Text START to 66867
Once enrolled in DailyPay to take advantage of Duke's earned wage access service, employees can also explore ADP's platform, Wisely, to see which of these two platforms best suits their needs. When a user opens the DailyPay app they will be alerted to a free EWA option via Wisely. They are then provided a referral code and directed to enroll via the myWisely app.
Both DailyPay and myWisely apps can be utilized to take advantage of Duke's EWA program; the chart below highlights the features of each. Employees are encouraged to decide which option best fits their needs.

No, employees cannot use both DailyPay and myWisely apps to access their earned wages simultaneously. However, employees are encouraged to interact with both apps, explore the different features and advantages that each app presents, and discover which works best for their own personal use.
For non-exempt employees:
To ensure available balances are current, it is critical that all non-exempt Duke employees interested in utilizing the earned wage access program clock-in and clock-out using their badge at a Duke University or Duke Health clocking station or report their time on a daily basis in Duke@Work. On a daily basis, Duke will provide a report of an employee's earned wages for that day based on the hours reported via API or Duke@Work for that day.
All employees must focus on accurate timekeeping to ensure complete and accurate shifts get reported. Missing or inaccurate timekeeping will prevent hours from being recognized by DailyPay, denying them early access to their earned wages.
Employees' available balances are updated with the previous day's earned wages at 8 am on the following day (including weekends).
Yes, employees can cancel both apps without penalty based on the DailyPay and Wisely cancellation policies.
No, to be eligible to participate in the EWA program, employees must participate in direct deposit. Wisely provides an option for a free account for all Duke employees.
Yes, you do need a bank account, debit card or prepaid card to sign up for DailyPay.
This differs depending on what type of employee you are:

- Monthly employees will have their available advance balance updated on a daily basis and can take an advance up to one day before the payday.
