Processing Benefits Deductions for Postdoctoral Scholars
On April 1, 2008, Duke launched its current Postdoctoral Policy. The policy applies to Postdoctoral Associates and Postdoctoral Scholars. If you are unfamiliar with the policy, please visit the Office of Postdoctoral Services website for details about all aspects of the policy.
As part of this policy, Postdoctoral Scholars receive a stipend for a portion of their medical insurance through the non-compensatory payment system. To be eligible for medical insurance, Postdoctoral Scholars must be on the compensatory payroll for 30 days before being transferred to the non-compensatory payroll. When the employee transfers, departments will need to establish a payment for the individual's stipend amount and a payment to cover the individual's medical insurance stipend and any necessary top-ups as outlined in the Postdoctoral Policy.
Corporate Payroll Services has partnered with the Office of Postdoctoral Services, Corporate Human Resources, The Provost's Office, the School of Medicine Human Resources, Business Managers and Human Resource Managers to develop a procedure for processing these benefit deductions. Annually, Corporate Payroll Services distributes the guidelines for processing these benefit deductions.
